MosaicSF #006. The Richmond District Parties On. Well, Sorta.
The Richmond. It’s the neighborhood in the north east part of San Francisco. You pass through it on the way to the beach. But, if you are hungry, you also stop to eat pierogi, dim sum or a steaming bowl of pho.
This fairly laid-back neighborhood is also the home to Clement Street and some of the city’s more personal approaches to retailing. For instance, this week Brian hangs out at his neighborhood’s Green Apple Books and discusses the history of the store with its owner Kevin Hunsanger. This isn’t your run-of-the-mill Barnes & Noble.
Brian’s next stop is the Toy Boat Dessert Café to hang with Jesse Fink, Toy Boat’s owner of over 20 years and Brooklyn transplant. The Toy Boat started as a dessert café, but morphed into deli with high end sipping chocolates and some serious cool toys.
And yes, folks…. Laura’s back and she shops in a couple of Asian stores on Clement looking for turtles for her turtle soup dinner. Afterwards, she scopes out the Richmond rock scene – yes there are clubs out there – with Rockit Room owner Marco and GM Joe who has worked at the place (it was once the Last day Saloon) for 20 years. And yes, he can still remember the old days!

Joe has not worked at the ROCK-IT Room (formerly the Last Day Saloon) for over 20 years. I was hanging out at the LDS way before Joe even started there and that was only 12 yaers ago. (I had good friends who worked there.
